Originally conceived as part of Mariano Fortuny's studio lighting, The Fortuny Lamp (nowadays produced by Palluco) reveals all the Renaissence power of the "Magician of Venice", as Marcel Proust called him.
Through his experiences with Wagner and the theatre, he began experimenting with light and he found that reflecting light off of different surfaces could change the color, intensity and other properties of light.
“It is not the quantity, but the quality of light, that makes things visible,” said the Spanish designer
As theatre set designer, Mariano Fortuny used indirect lighting techniques in his new invention, the Fortuny System ( “Système d'illumination scénique par la lumière indirecte” , 1900), a quarter-sphere dome, which covered the stage and acted like a large reflector, replacing the painted skies used in traditional stage decoration.
The Fortuny Lamp (1907) expresses the early modernist emphasis on industrial materials, functional style and the spatial role of objects, spite of it was not thought for home interiors but for working.
A Design Classic but still a sensation nowadays .
